Bleeding Gums and Gum Health: What a Hygiene Appointment Does

Gums that bleed when you brush are not “just a sensitive patch”. Bleeding is the earliest visible sign of inflammation, and inflammation is the body’s response to plaque that has been left undisturbed along the gum line. It is common, it is treatable, and it is much easier to treat early.

Gingivitis and periodontitis are not the same

Gingivitis is inflammation confined to the gums. They look red, feel tender and bleed on brushing. At this stage the damage is reversible with good cleaning and a professional clean.

Periodontitis is different. The inflammation spreads to the tissues that hold the tooth in place, the bone begins to be lost, and the gum pulls away from the tooth forming pockets. Bone that is lost does not grow back. Periodontitis is managed, not cured, and it needs ongoing maintenance.

This is why the answer to “will my gums grow back” is uncomfortable: the gum can reattach after treatment, but lost bone does not return.

Signs worth acting on

  • Bleeding when brushing or flossing
  • Red, swollen or tender gums
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Gums that have started to recede, making teeth look longer
  • Loose teeth or a change in how your bite feels
  • Spaces appearing between teeth that were not there before

Why it matters beyond the mouth

Gum disease is associated with several systemic conditions, including diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The relationship is complex and largely associative rather than a simple cause and effect — but the practical conclusion is straightforward: inflamed gums are a health issue, not a cosmetic one, and patients with diabetes in particular benefit from good periodontal control.

What happens at a hygiene appointment

A hygiene visit is not a polish and a chat. It typically includes:

  1. Assessment of the gums, including measuring pocket depth around each tooth where indicated
  2. Removal of plaque and calculus above and below the gum line
  3. Polishing to remove surface stain
  4. Review of your home cleaning technique, with specific advice for your mouth
  5. A recommendation on how often you should return

Scale and polish, airflow, or deep cleaning?

These are different treatments, not marketing tiers:

  • Scale and polish — removes plaque and calculus and is appropriate for healthy gums or mild gingivitis
  • Airflow stain removal — a fine powder and water spray that lifts surface stain from coffee, tea and smoking; cosmetic in purpose
  • Deep cleaning (root surface debridement) — treatment for periodontitis, carried out with local anaesthetic, usually quadrant by quadrant, followed by a review

At ēm dental, hygiene scale and polish starts from £85, and non-surgical periodontal treatment is quoted separately. Current fees are on our treatment price list.

What you do between appointments matters more

A hygiene appointment removes what has built up; it does not prevent it building up again. The single most effective habit is cleaning between the teeth daily — interdental brushes where the gaps allow, floss where they do not. Brushing alone cleans roughly the visible surfaces and leaves the spaces between teeth untouched, which is exactly where gum disease starts.

Bleeding is not a reason to stop cleaning. It is a reason to clean more carefully, and it usually settles within one to two weeks of consistent daily cleaning.

When to book

Most patients benefit from a hygiene appointment every six months, but the right interval depends on your gum health, smoking status, medical history and how well you clean. Some need three months; some need a year. Your dentist and hygienist should set that interval with you rather than applying a default.

If your gums bleed regularly, or it has been more than a year since your last visit, book an appointment at our W2 clinic. A dental check-up is usually the right starting point.

Frequently asked questions

Does a scale and polish hurt?

For healthy gums it is usually comfortable, with mild sensitivity around the gum line. If your gums are inflamed or you need deep cleaning, local anaesthetic is used.

Will my gums bleed more after treatment?

Bleeding often increases briefly while the gums heal, then reduces as inflammation settles. Persistent bleeding after two weeks should be reviewed.

Can I reverse gum disease?

Gingivitis, yes. Periodontitis can be controlled and stabilised, but bone loss is permanent. That is why early treatment matters so much.

Is bleeding gums a sign of vitamin deficiency?

Occasionally, but plaque-related inflammation is far more common. If bleeding persists despite good cleaning, it is worth a conversation with your dentist and, if appropriate, your GP.

How often should I have a hygiene appointment?

It is individual. Six months is a common starting point, but your gum condition, smoking status and home care determine the right interval for you.
